Things I learned at Day Camp, that I wish I knew When I Ran An OverNight Camp

“It’s Just a Day Camp.” There seems to be hierarchy in Camping, with large sleep away camps on top, and small day camps in urban centers at the bottom. what’s worse I played a role in reinforcing this idea. I thought to work at a Overnight Camps was some how better or more prestigious.

But now having run both I realize I was wrong. With more competition, more parent interactions, less space and often smaller budgets Day Camps seem to deal with so much of camping’s down side, with little of the upside, and yet as we have emerged from Covid they have learned and adapted much faster, and seem to have bounced back quicker that sleep away camps. Learn what the last 5 years has taught me and what I would do differently at Overnight Camp.

It’s not “just’ a day camp.

Rethinking Staff Recruitment, Engagement and Retention: A Mental Health Approach

Post pandemic one of Camping’s most common and reoccurring concerns has been the “availability” and “quality” of summer staff, with camps having to reduce enrollment, as they are unable to fill their payrolls. When camps finally find staff, they are reporting that many of their new hires are complaining that they feel overworked, and unwilling or unable to do certain tasks. This leads to multiple requests for time off or mental health days, resulting in a high exit rate.

But there is a huge body of research that shows that when we feel like we ‘matter’ all our mental health markers improve. Camps that show their staff that they matter, and that they have an important role in the world have better staff retention, spend less time and money on hiring, and their staff have better mental health outcomes. Learn how to improve the quality of your camp by using the science of mattering.

This talk was given as the Keynote at the 2022 Mid Atlantic ACA conference.
